Reiki is a form of integrative therapy. It is a stress reduction and relaxation technique that enhances the body's ability to heal itself. It is a powerful yet gentle method. It originated in Japan with the philosophy and practice taught by Sensei Usui Mikao. The Reiki that I practice and teach is based as closely as possible on his teachings as passed on through my lineage.
Reiki is benificial to everyone. It can be used simply as a "tune-up" in times of acute stress or crisis or as a complimentary therapy with chronic illness. For example when used in conjunction with chemotherapy it will decrease the side effects by first reducing the stress the client is under. It is somewhat like running with a full stomach. Your body isn't sure if it should digest the food or run. The same with acute or chronic illnesses. The body is trying to cope with the stresses brought about by the clients reaction to their diagnosis and treatment and is unable to heal itself. Reiki brings the levels of stress, anxiety and overwhelm down to a workable level. The body can then begin the healing process.
Each session typically lasts forty five minutes to an hour. The client lies down fully clothed on a massage table or sits in a chair. The practitioner uses guided imagery to quiet the mind. They place their hands on or abovethe clients body in a continuous series of positions allowing the Reiki energy to flow from their palms. The session takes place in a quiet relaxing environment. The usual time frame is once a week for three weeks and then their progress is evaluated. We adjust the sessions to once every two weeks, once a month and then when needed.
